The High Lama Was Right: One Simple Rule — Be Kind

In the 1937 film Lost Horizon, based on the novel by James Hilton, there is a powerful moment inside the mystical valley of Shangri-La. The High Lama — the spiritual leader of that hidden paradise — reveals the secret to peace, harmony, and longevity. It is not complicated. It is not political. It is not technological. It is one simple rule: Be kind. That’s it.

For years on my Be Kind World Tour, I have been sharing the same message. Not because it sounds nice. But because it works. In Lost Horizon, Shangri-La thrives because its people choose moderation, compassion, and understanding over greed, ego, and aggression. The High Lama understood something humanity still struggles to accept: Civilizations collapse not from lack of intelligence — but from lack of kindness.

We have advanced further technologically than any generation in history. Yet emotionally? Spiritually? Ethically? We are still learning the basics. Kindness is not weakness. It is the highest form of strength. It takes no courage to criticize. It takes courage to care. It takes no effort to divide. It takes discipline to unite.

The High Lama’s “one simple rule” is not simplistic — it is profound.
Be kind to yourself — so you are not at war within.
Be kind to others — so society is not at war around you.
Be kind to Mother Earth — so future generations inherit paradise, not pollution.

Shangri-La was fictional. But the principle was real. When I speak to schools, communities, and nations, I am not offering a fantasy.

I am offering a formula. Imagine if world leaders adopted one guiding principle before every decision: Is it kind? Imagine if social media users asked one question before posting: Is it kind? Imagine if businesses measured success not just by profit — but by impact. Is it kind? The High Lama said peace would come when humanity learned balance and compassion.

Nearly ninety years later, the message is still waiting to be fully embraced. The secret has been hiding in plain sight. Not in a Himalayan valley. But in the human heart. One simple rule. Be Kind. And if enough of us live it consistently, Shangri-La will not be a legend. It will be reality.
Be Kind.
Be the example.
Be Fantastic. 🌎
