I’m very happy to have discovered Stoicism, even though I’ve realized that much of the way I have always thought about life is already aligned with its philosophy. One of its greatest lessons is something I believe everyone should understand:
Stop worrying about what “they” say and think about you.
People spend far too much of their precious lives concerned about other people’s opinions. What will they think? What will they say? Will they approve of me? Will they criticize me? In the end, it really doesn’t matter.
What matters is knowing in your own heart that you are doing the right thing, living according to your values, and following your own path. People will always have opinions. Some will understand you. Some won’t. Some will support you. Others may criticize you without ever truly knowing you.
Let their words and opinions run off you like water off a duck’s back. Think about it: when you are dead and gone, will it matter what somebody once said about you? Certainly not.
Of course, I would like to be remembered as a kind, loving, generous and giving person. I hope my life inspires others to become kinder. But whether I am remembered or forgotten does not change how I should live today. And today is what we have. Life is short. So be positive. Be grateful. Be kind. Most importantly, learn to love yourself unconditionally. That is why the first of my Three Commitments to Kindness is:
Be Kind to Yourself.
I believe it may be the hardest commitment—and perhaps the most important. You cannot control what other people think about you, but you can control how you think about yourself. You can control your actions, your attitude, your character and the kindness you put into the world.
Live your life. Love yourself. Follow your path. When kindness and love begin within you, they can transcend outward—to your family, your community, your country and ultimately our entire world. Imagine what could happen if billions of people stopped wasting their energy worrying about what “they” think and instead used that energy to become better, kinder and more loving human beings.
That could change the world. Join the Kindness Revolution. Tell your family and friends about what we are doing, and help us create a better, kinder and cleaner future. It’s free, it’s my gift to this beautiful planet.
Remember:
They can think what they want.
They can say what they want.
You decide who you are.
Be Kind to Yourself.
Be Kind to All Others.
Be Kind to Our Mother Earth.
Have a Fantastic life!
