Across America, another troubling trend is unfolding—one that affects millions of children and families. Private equity firms are purchasing local youth sports facilities and dramatically increasing fees, turning what was once a community resource into a profit-driven business.
These investors have discovered that youth sports can be even more profitable than many professional sports. Parents are often willing to make tremendous sacrifices so their children can play, learn, compete, and grow. Unfortunately, some firms are taking advantage of that dedication by raising prices, adding unnecessary fees, and placing profits ahead of children.
The consequences are heartbreaking. Families with limited incomes are increasingly unable to afford participation. Children lose opportunities to exercise, build confidence, develop teamwork, make lifelong friends, and stay active. Instead of bringing communities together, youth sports risk becoming a privilege only for those who can afford the rising costs.
Youth sports are about much more than winning games. They teach discipline, perseverance, respect, leadership, and resilience. They help young people develop healthy habits and provide positive alternatives to unhealthy influences. Every child deserves the chance to experience these benefits, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
When essential community resources become focused solely on maximizing profits, society pays the price. Healthy, active children become excluded, and communities lose valuable spaces that once promoted physical fitness, friendship, and personal development.
It’s time for communities, local governments, nonprofits, and caring citizens to work together to protect affordable youth sports. We must ensure that every child has the opportunity to play, grow, and dream—not just those whose parents can afford ever-increasing fees.
A society should be judged not by how much profit it generates, but by how well it invests in its children. Their future is our future.
Be Fantastic. Be Kind. Help create a world where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
